The Architecture of Power: Triplicity, Exaltation, and Spear-Bearing in Nayib Bukele’s Chart

In today’s chart, we will examine the nativity of the current president of El Salvador through a Hellenistic framework, focusing on the conditions that signify eminence and authority. Nayib Bukele was born at 2:15 AM on July 24, 1981, in San Salvador, into a family of Palestinian descent. His father, Armando Bukele, was a businessman and imam, exposing him early to both commerce and religious thought. Bukele did not follow a traditional academic path, leaving university to pursue business ventures, particularly in advertising and media. This early immersion in branding and communication would later become a defining feature of his political identity.

He entered politics through the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front, serving first as mayor of Nuevo Cuscatlán from 2012 to 2015, and then as mayor of San Salvador from 2015 to 2018. During this time, he built a reputation for efficiency, visible public works, and a modern, media-driven approach to governance. His relationship with the party eventually deteriorated, leading to his expulsion, a pivotal moment that set him on an independent political path.

Bukele ran for president in 2019 under the banner of the Grand Alliance for National Unity, breaking the long-standing dominance of the country’s two major parties. His victory marked a significant shift in El Salvador’s political landscape. Positioning himself as an outsider, he challenged entrenched systems of power and leveraged social media as a direct channel to the public, bypassing traditional political structures.

As president, Bukele has been both widely supported and heavily criticized. His administration’s aggressive crackdown on gang violence has led to a dramatic reduction in crime, while also raising concerns regarding human rights and due process. He also gained global attention for making El Salvador the first country to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender, a move viewed by some as innovative and by others as highly speculative. His leadership style is centralized and assertive, blending populist rhetoric with decisive executive action, and reinforcing his image as a dominant and highly visible figure on the world stage.

Triplicity Rulers of the Sect Light

Now turning to the astrological chart, the first consideration is the triplicity rulers of the sect light. Bukele was born with the Sun below the horizon and the Moon above the horizon in her own domain, establishing a nocturnal nativity. Accordingly, we examine the triplicity of the sign occupied by the Moon. The Moon is in Taurus, the place of her exaltation. Although she is cadent in the twelfth house, she retains strong essential dignity through her exalted condition.

In a nocturnal chart, the Moon serves as the primary triplicity ruler of the earth signs and is therefore the first planet to be assessed. As the sect light, her condition carries significant weight. While her cadent placement introduces some weakness, her exaltation and rulership of the sect substantially mitigate this, preserving her capacity to signify strength and support within the chart. Following the method outlined by Demetra George in Ancient Astrology, Volume II, and using the Porphyry house system to evaluate planetary strength, the Moon is placed in the eleventh house, the place of Good Spirit. This strengthens her condition further. This is reflected in his life, as he rose through collective structures before ultimately being expelled, a turning point that led him toward independence and the formation of his own path.

Next, we consider Venus as the second triplicity ruler of the earth signs. Venus is in excellent condition. She is the benefic of the sect and casts a whole sign square to the Moon, linking her directly to the sect light. She is also technically angular if we follow Ptolemy’s consideration that a planet within five degrees of a house cusp gains angular strength. In this case, she is at 29 degrees of Leo, a critical and climactic degree. Venus is also conjunct the royal star Regulus, long associated with authority, prominence, and elevation. This placement reinforces themes of visibility and distinction, though traditionally such elevation carries the expectation of integrity in the exercise of power. Venus is occidental, free from combustion and retrogradation, and unafflicted by the malefics, further strengthening her testimony.

Finally, we assess the condition of the third, or assisting, triplicity ruler, Mars. At first glance, Mars appears weakened due to his placement in fall, which cannot be ignored. However, he gains significant strength by casting a ray to the Midheaven within three degrees. As noted by Demetra George, a planet that aspects an angle within three degrees gains strength and can function as though angular. In addition, when using the Porphyry house system, Mars is placed in an angular house, granting him further accidental dignity. This transforms Mars from a purely weakened planet into one capable of action and visible impact.

Taken together, the condition of the Moon, Venus, and Mars presents a coherent testimony toward eminence. The sect light is dignified and supported, the benefic of the sect is elevated and prominent, and even the assisting ruler is empowered through angularity. This is not a chart of obscurity, but one that clearly points toward visibility, authority, and influence.

The Lot of Exaltation

As directed by Vettius Valens, another layer in assessing eminence is the Lot of Exaltation. For day charts, we take the position of the Sun and count to 18 degrees of Aries, understood as the 19th degree, projecting that distance from the Ascendant. For night charts, the procedure is reversed, using the Moon’s position to 2 degrees of Taurus, understood as the 3rd degree. Since this is a nocturnal chart, we proceed from the Moon.

The Moon is at 0 degrees of Taurus, very close to her exaltation degree. Projecting from the Ascendant, the Lot of Exaltation falls at 16 degrees of Gemini in the first house. Valens states that if the Lot or its ruler is found in the Ascendant or Midheaven, especially in relation to the Lot itself, the nativity will by no means be deprived of eminence. Here, the Lot is not only placed in the Ascendant, but it is also angular in relation to itself, occupying the strongest position it can hold. This directly affirms the chart’s capacity for elevation and public distinction.

When examining Bukele’s life and political approach, this symbolism becomes evident. The ruler of the Lot, Mercury, is associated with communication, messaging, and strategy. This is clearly reflected in his background in marketing and his highly effective use of social media, not only as a tool for self-presentation but as a primary channel for communicating political decisions and shaping public perception.

It is also significant that he was born under a Jupiter-Saturn conjunction, with both Jupiter and Saturn casting a whole sign trine to the Lot of Exaltation. These planets, associated with rulership, structure, and worldly authority, lend additional support to the Lot. Their testimony reinforces the broader pattern in the chart, pointing toward sustained prominence, influence, and the capacity to rise to positions of power.

Spear Bearing

The final layer to consider is what is known in the Hellenistic tradition as spear-bearing, or bodyguard. I will not go into extensive detail on the technique here, but rather focus on its application in this chart. In brief, there are several methods for identifying spear-bearing, and authors such as Ptolemy, Porphyry, and Antiochus of Athens present similar frameworks, though they differ in certain technical requirements. As with astrologers today, there was no absolute consensus, and variations in method were common among the astrologers of antiquity.

My primary experience has been with Porphyry’s approach. However, as I continue to refine this technique, I also take into account the variations presented by other authors. In this case, Antiochus, like Porphyry, outlines three ways in which a planet may function as a spear-bearer. Here, we focus on the third method, which does not require the strict angularity emphasized in Porphyry’s model.

In the chart of Nayib Bukele, we again work from the sect light and examine the planets casting rays to the degrees the Moon is moving toward. Mars, at 4 degrees of Cancer, casts a sextile to 4 degrees of Taurus, the degree the Moon will encounter as it progresses through the sign. In this way, Mars functions as a spear-bearer to the Moon. In addition, Venus casts a square to 29 degrees of Taurus, another degree within the Moon’s path. This gives us two planets of the sect actively casting rays to the Moon’s trajectory.

The presence of multiple spear-bearers strengthens the testimony of the chart. According to Porphyry, nativities with spear-bearing planets are associated with distinction and prominence. When considered alongside the previously established testimonies, this further reinforces the indication of eminence and supports the broader pattern of authority and visibility present throughout the chart.

Conclusion

To conclude, when we synthesize the testimony of the triplicity rulers, the Lot of Exaltation, and the presence of spear-bearing, a consistent pattern comes up. This is a chart that clearly points toward elevation, visibility, and authority. Each technique, independently, testifies to eminence, yet taken together, they reinforce one another and remove any ambiguity in the delineation.

What becomes most striking is not simply the presence of dignity, but the coherence of the chart as a whole. The sect light is supported, the benefic of the sect is elevated and connected to a royal fixed star, the Lot of Exaltation is placed in the Ascendant, and the Moon is attended by spear-bearers. These are structured frameworks that points toward prominence in a decisive and unmistakable way.

When we then turn to the life of Nayib Bukele, we see these configurations reflected in concrete terms. His rise to power, his ability to command attention, and his sustained visibility on both a national and global stage align closely with the promises indicated in the chart. The symbolism is lived and expressed through his actions, decisions, and public presence.

Ultimately, this chart serves as a clear example of how traditional techniques, when applied with precision, can reveal the underlying architecture of a life. In this case, that architecture is one of authority, distinction, and enduring prominence.
